Dahlia Exuberance - combining all of the techniques
In the cool of the Olga Community Club, we will tackle the major problem of combining the techniques of watercolor into completed and pleasing paintings. This is an indoor class, although there are picnic tables outside the Community Club where one can work if the day calls you outside.
We will work on:
1) planning your painting; an absolute necessity if only to define where your light areas are so that you can stay out of them
2) drawing for your watercolor -- what do you need to do? what don't you?
3) saving the lights while working wet-on-wet
4) pushing focal areas out with negative painting
5) learning when and how to move from soft edges to hard; from bright to dull; from light to dark.
6) choosing when to glaze
7) how do you decide when your painting is done?

No Triple Crown Wet-blending, line and wash
We will try to keep the ideas simple enough that each day you will do a new painting from inception to completion. Come with some ideas or bring some failed paintings to help us analyze where you got off track.

3-color glazing
This class if for continuing non-credit students but is also being offered for credit through Loyola Marymount. In addition to the expectations listed above, the credit students will take their designing further with a project in color design. They will need to complete 45 hours of work which could include work on Wednesday, some design work in advance of the class, or some final work on Saturday.
Olga is a hamlet on the east side of Orcas, a half hour from the ferry landing. It is quiet, away from the tourist hustle of some of the island in midsummer. It has a post office, a small store with an excellent deli counter, an artist cooperative gallery with an excellent cafe open for lunch and early dinner, and a second cafe 3 miles out at Doe Bay.
Obstruction Island and the pass with Leiber Haven's dock
The housing listed below specifies which places are near-by. You may choose to avoid ferry issues and either take the watertaxi from Anacortes to Olga, the foot ferry from Bellingham to Obstruction Pass (tell me and I will meet you), or fly into Eastsound and rent a car there. If you do choose to bring your car on the ferry and notify me a month in advance, sending a check for $25 and a stamped self-addressed envelope, I will send you a copy of a commuter ticket which cuts the price of your fare in half.
Feel free to contact me with any questions. The class will probably fill quickly so get your deposits in as soon as you are sure.

Transportation
Highway I-5 to exit 230, route 20. Turn west and follow the road through Anacortes to the ferry (obeying the 30 mph speed limit!) - drive is a half hour from I-5.
Ferry: from Anacortes. For schedule information, see the Washington State Ferries Web site or call 1-888-808-7977. The workshops are planned, where possible, to take advantage of off-peak travel times. Plan to be in line one to one and a half hours ahead of time (bring a book or start your sketchbook). Arrive the afternoon or early evening before the workshop, if possible. Car-pooling with one or more members of your class reduces expenses. You may leave on the late afternoon sailing on the last day.
Because of the cost of ferry tickets in the summer, I will purchase a bulk book of fares. If you wish, a month before the class you may send me a check for $25 and a stamped self-addressed envelope. I will mail you ticket for a (normal sized) car and driver.
Flights: into Sea-Tac (Seattle) can connect with a shuttle bus to the ferry: Airporter Shuttle or 1-800-BELLAIR. You must have reservations.)
Or you may connect with
West Isle Air, 1-800-874-4434, which can fly you from Seattle to Orcas. You can reserve a car by the Orcas ferry landing: 360-376-3883, at the Eastsound airport: 360-376-4176, rent one at Sea-Tac (way more expensive), or hope to share rides with others in the class (please help generously with gas costs). Rose Air, 503-635-8834, offers charter flights--a real bargain with 3 passengers aboard--from Hillsboro Airport outside of Portland. Or stay near-by and walk!
Boats: If you plan to live aboard your boat, or would like to moor it, call me for the different kinds of arrangements possible. There is a fresh water boat launch at Cascade Lake and a salt water one at Obstruction Pass.
Plan to pick up a San Juan Beckons or Springtide on the ferry for a map and useful information.
Don't forget to fill your gas tank before coming. Gas is even higher on the island! and
You can see a map of Orcas Island at google maps or http://www.sanjuanweb.com/webmaps/orcas.htm
