INSPIRATION FROM THE MASTERS

4 weekends, Jan - April, 2010
ArtWorks, Edmonds, WA

This is the sixth year of a winter weekend series at the ArtWorks in Edmonds. Each year we have explored an area of watercolor -- such as color or design -- in depth. And each year there has been a supportive atmosphere in which significant growth has taken place. Our focus for the coming season will be the lessons of the master teacher with whom it was Caroline's good fortune to study: Rex Brandt, Millard Sheets, Christopher Schink, Robert Woods, Don Andrews and others. Each has made significant contributions to the development of watercolor as the American medium. In understanding the differences and the common themes of these important teachers, you will broaden your understanding of watercolor and perhaps come closer to defining your unique relationship to the medium.

DRAWING FOR THE UNCERTAIN ARTIST

Tues. Feb. 23, Thurs. Feb. 25, Sat. Feb 27
Orcas Senior Center, Orcas Island, WA

Would you love to draw but don't think you can? This class is for those who are unsure of their drawing skills. Drawing is a learnable skill -- and you can do it! Like the 90 lb. weakling of the Charles Atlas ads, at the end of these three days you will be wowing them on the beach -- not with your muscles but with the fact that you, too, can draw.
It is easy and fun! And empowering.

TELLING A LIFE JOURNEY STORY

Fridays, March, 12, 26, April 9, 30
Orcas Senior Center, Orcas Island, WA

What is your story? What journeys in your life or in your family's are part of your lore? How did you come to be where you now live?

We have stories of the journeys that brought our ancestors to the Americas. We have our own personal journeys through joys and heartache, confusion and inspiration. In a class this spring, Caroline will be helping students with personal interpretations of their journeys -- using writing, drawing, and watercolor; ink, paint and collage, or any combination of the above.
Class limited to 10.

WORKING WITH THE MASTERS

Thursdays, April 1, 15, 29 and May 6; 9:30 - 4:00
Cottage Hobby House, Anacortes

This is a shorter version of the "Masters" series that I been offering in Edmonds for the past two winters. Each Thursday we will study some of the most important lessons of four of the watercolor masters of the 20th century who taught and inspired me: Rex Brandt, Millard Sheets and/or Ed Whitney, Christopher Schink and Don Andrews. Although, in a single day it is impossible to convey the depth of these men as artists and teachers, by focusing on some of their most lasting lessons, the student will both gain greater knowledge of the masters of watercolor in the 20th century, and benefit from their insight.

CONTINUING WATERCOLOR

July 27-30, Tuesday - Friday, 9:30-3:30
Olga Community Club,Orcas Island, WA

You have learned the basic processes but are still having trouble putting them all together in a painting that pleases you. In this four-day class, you will learn the steps by which you combine the processes to a finished painting. Sometimes one process should dominate. Sometimes another -- how do you choose? What do you do first? And what must you save until later? If these are questions that are stalling your work in watercolor, then it's time to continue. Class size limited to 10 to allow for a great deal of individual attention.

If the demand is there, a second section of this class may be scheduled on August 24-27. You may let me know if this is better for your schedule.
